Courses for recreational and professional coaches are sponsored by the USSF (through CYSA) and the NSCAA.
Entry-level CYSA Courses
The United States Soccer Federation offers a range of courses for coaches. The initial courses, F through D are conducted by the state soccer federation, in our case, through the California Youth Soccer Federation.
The entry level course is a level F course, which teaches the basics of organizing practices and teaching basic skills to young players. The F course is typically held on a Friday evening for three hours of classroom instruction, followed by a Saturday on the field.
The next course is an E level course which is a Friday evening followed by Saturday and Sunday on the field. This course adds more advanced skills (such as "second defender") and is also highly recommended for recreational coaches.

USSF National Courses
Having acquired a D license, the United States Soccer Federation then offers higher-level coaches a series of 'national' courses C through A.

National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Courses
The NSCAA also sponsors a full Coaching Education Program, which ranges from "Parent Coach" through several levels of advanced professional diplomas. NSCAA courses are held locally as well as in 50-hour residential programs.
