TPSC PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

Tiburon has had a solid soccer program for years, but with some specific deficiencies rooted in our historical roots as a community organization evolving in a generally unplanned manner. Our goal is to build on the strengths of the existing program with plans to address the identified problems and move forward with a cohesive and stronger program.

We expect our new program to provide:

  • A focus on the primary goal of each child’s development as a soccer player while helping to instill a lifelong love of the game
    • The first priority in our club is “player,” followed by “club” and then by “team.” We believe these are the correct priorities and they form the heart of our program.
    • The players’ development and the enjoyment of being able to have a command for the game should be stressed, not just the number of wins a team has each year.
    • Players should gain strength and pride by being part of a larger club, where they can interact with older role models and be role models themselves for younger players.
    • They should enjoy competing on a team and enjoying the camaraderie of their teammates as they participate during a season.

  • A consistent and thorough training curriculum appropriate to all players, girls and boys, at all ages and levels, throughout both our Recreational and Competitive programs.
    • On-field training sessions, clinics and camps will be designed to teach and enhance individual skills
      • Fast Footwork is an example of the type of additional program where players develop the necessary skills to compete and grow. We recognize that drills may not be the most fun way to spend time, but will pay off in games and in the future programs they graduate to.
      • The position of Goalkeeper is among the most important on a team and requires training and skills specific to that position. The majority of competitive coaches grew up as “field players” and did not train as keepers, nor gain more than ancillary experience as keepers. For that reason, we will provide specific Goalkeepers’ clinics to teach these skills to all players who are interested.
      • Other programs, such as a local summer camp and topical clinics, such as Ball-Striking, are expected to be developed and offered.
      • Players will have the opportunity to be trained by other coaches –utilizing their particular strengths; and with players from other teams so as to expand the pool of players and skills that they train with and enhance their sense of participation in a “club.”

  • Provision of professional mentoring and training for both competitive and volunteer coaches
    • We will strive for a cooperative flow of information between coaches and trainings, and a rotation of camps to enhance the players experience as well as that of the coaches.
    • As the recreational season approaches, our coaching staff will work closely with our volunteer parent coaches to offer them the kind of training we've always hoped we could deliver, as well as provide professional skills training for our Rec players of all ages.
      • We value our Rec coaches who put in significant time and effort to teach the kids, but we have been approached by them every year for help in how to coach since not all of them played soccer as kids.
      • We look to improve the level of coaching in Rec to increase the enjoyment of the game for the children through their learning and which we believe will also increase the talent pool in the future for the competitive programs.

  • Coordinated management of our coaches by a single Director of Coaching and not management by committee.  Increased accountability for and from the coaches. Professional supervision of their coaching and personal interactions with players, parents and referees.
    • The Internal Revenue Service and our parent organizations have mandated that our coaches be employees and not independent contractors. As employers, we recognize that we now have legal responsibility for the actions of our coaches and require consistent professional supervision for them.
    • We will provide fair and consistent compensation for our coaches within the range of that of comparable clubs.
    • We will require and/or facilitate all of our competitive coaches and trainers to earn a National coaching license
      • As with any other teaching profession, good coaching starts with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills. The national coaching licensing courses provide a foundation of soccer training methods and teaching skills that will allow coaches and the club to provide a methodical, developmental and consistent curriculum to our children.
    • Our Coaches will adhere to the TPSC Coaches Code of Conduct.
      • Internally, our program will monitor and enforce our Code of Conduct and apply our stated progressive discipline process when necessary.
      • Externally, our program will coordinate with the District V PAD committee when necessary.

  • Encourage a sense of Club Spirit among all Tiburon Peninsula teams.
    • We took the step of moving from being a league of diverse teams and coaching styles to the "Club" paradigm which is common throughout the world. Rather than a collection of individual teams doing "their own thing," club teams use common training methods, often train together (across team, age and gender), and identify with the club instead of just with their particular team.
    • Instead of many differently named competitive division teams, all take on the parent club's name. It's common, when appropriate, for club teams to enter the same tournaments and root for their sister teams. The idea is to build a club identity and a club esprit de corps.
  • Opportunities for older players to mentor younger players
    • We believe that there is significant value in younger kids having role models who show the dedication to skill development, team unity, and passion for the game but also the responsibility to give back to the community that they grew in.
    • In the Fast Footwork, Goalie clinics, and age group/ gender cross-trainings, we will provide opportunities for leadership for the older kids, while also developing strong bonds with the younger kids. Kids love to have older role models, and with a well developed club concept, the kids work hard to be like their older models.

  • Sponsorship of a full range of Division I (Select), Division III (Upper house) and Division IV (Recreational) teams
    • We feel that all players should have the opportunity to compete at the highest level that their skill and interest will allow.
    • Expanding on our current practice, we will develop more of the lower base of the pyramid so in the future we will have a competitive team at all levels keeping the kids with the local club.

  • Create Buy-In by the players, parents, managers, and community of new club concept and program.
    • Leverage areas that have worked well in the past.
    • Develop and implement communication methodologies to ensure broad understanding of our objectives and goals, and the place and importance of the different programs we utilize to achieve them.

We would expect any transition so significant to take time, energy, dedication and understanding as we go through the growing pains to becomes successful. Much as you would not fire a coach after the pre season, we believe that the commitment to the philosophy and implementation of the programs is long-term.  We expect to be successful and as with any good business, we will be monitoring our progress throughout the year toward meeting these objectives.
